Neutral SF/sub 6/ clusters formed in supersonic beam seeded in He were subjected to impact of either high-Rydberg atoms (RAI) or electrons with an average energy of approx. =2.5 eV (EI). Negative ions, (SF/sub 6/)/sub n//sup -/(1 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 11), produced by RAI were observed by mass spectrometry, while SF/sub 5//sup -/ and a trace of (SF/sub 6/)/sub n-1/SF/sub 5//sup -/ (2 less than or equal to n less than or equal to 4) were also observed by EI. The intensities of (SF/sub 6/)/sub n//sup -/ (n greater than or equal to 3) produced by RAI decreased less rapidly with increasing n than those produced by EI. This difference in the size distributions is ascribed to that in the degree of evaporation of SF/sub 6/ molecules from the cluster ions: In RAI the evaporation does not extensively influence the distribution, whereas in EI several molecules are removed from the cluster ion in order to release the excess energy given by the electron trapped in the cluster. The absence of (SF/sub 6/)/sub n-1/SF/sub 5//sup -/ (n greater than or equal to 2) in RAI is probably caused by the smallness of the excess vibrational energy localized in the SF/sub 6//sup -/ component in (SF/sub 6/)/sub n//sup -/. The small cross section for the corresponding dissociative electron attachment in EI suggests that the energy of the attached electron is transmitted more efficiently to the intermolecular vibrations of the cluster ion than to the intramolecular vibrations of the SF/sub 6//sup -/ component in (SF/sub 6/)/sub n//sup -/.
