Assessment of commercial readiness of solar water heating

Conference · · Proc. Annu. Meet. - Am. Sect. Int. Sol. Energy Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5900263
An assessment is presented of commercial readiness of solar hot water systems. Based on the results of this study there is documented proof that the solar industry is blessed with over 20 good solar hot water systems. The most recent economics are extremely encouraging for the large scale implementation of solar energy. Solar hot water continues to be cost competitive with electricity in most areas even without the federal and state incentives. When applying the most recent federal and state incentives and today's increased energy costs, solar water heaters are even competitive with conventional gas heaters. However, the solar hot water industry is an infant industry. It is not without its problems, such as design deficiencies, improper selection of components and subsystems. These problems will be resolved as this industry matures.
