Synfuels: suddenly things look good

Journal Article · · World Oil; (United States)
OSTI ID:5925639
Although the world's coal and shale resources and available technology are currently sufficient to support a synthetic-fuels industry, the financial incentives and public backing necessary to the success of such an industry have remained deficient. Most encouraging for the future, however, is the number of coal-conversion projects that will be solely privately supported rather than jointly with the government. Private industry has been ready to build synfuel plants for a decade; only recently, however, have the federal government and the public exhibited any sincere interest in moving toward commercialization. As oil and natural gas reserves approach depletion, even more attention will focus on ambitious synfuels projects.
