The cross-measure borehole technique is being developed jointly by the Bureau of Mines (BoM) and Bethlehem Mines Corp. as an alternative to current US longwall methane control techniques. Methane contained in the fractured strata is collected in the cross-measure boreholes and drawn through an underground pipeline to a central surface borehole by a vacuum pump. Proposes that the cross-measure borehole system is an effective alternative to vertical gob boreholes for controlling methane in gobs during longwall mining in the Upper Kittanning seam. In other areas, borehole length, spacing, and inclination will depend upon geologic conditions and methane source beds in the roof strata.
