The authors study the relative flourescence intensity and lifetimes of excited uranyl ions at various temperatures of frozen solutions of uranyl in H/sub 3/PO/sub 4/ and H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/ with variable concentrations of quenchers: Cl/sup -/, Fe/sup 2 +/, and Eu/sup 3 +/, as well as in liquid solutions at 203 degrees K. They calculate the values of the rate of quenching of the flourescence of uranyl according to the Stern-Volmer equation. They suggest that the transfer of energy of excitation of uranyl ions to the ions of quenchers occurs not during their kinetic collisions but according to one of the mechanisms of long-range interaction. At 77 degrees K, they show, the influence of the investigated quenchers becomes negligible, which permits a direct determination of uranium in natural objects, for example, in ocean water.
