The luminescence of uranyl and trivalent Eu, Tb, and Dy in H{sub 2}SO{sub 4} solutions of various concentration and in polysilicate solutions is studied at room temperature. Uranyl excitation energy is transferred to Eu and Tb ions in H{sub 2}SO{sub 4} solutions and is accompanied by their sensitized luminescence, which is most intense for Eu. The rate constants of quenching k{sub q} and radiationless transfer k{sub 1} are determined. The values in 8 M H{sub 2}SO{sub 4} for Eu and Tb, respectively, are: k{sub q} = (2.90 {+-} 0.40){center_dot}10{sup 6}, (2.2 {+-} 0.2){center_dot}10{sup 6} and k{sub 1} = (0.64 {+-} 0.23){center_dot}10{sup 6}, 0.03{center_dot}10{sup 6}. Sensitized luminescence was not observed for Dy. The mutual influence of rare earths and uranyl in polysilicate (PS) was studied. A mutual effect was not observed in the system Tb-UO{sub 2}-PS. Sensitization of Eu luminescence in H{sub 2}SO{sub 4} solutions by excited uranyl is shown to be analytically useful.
