New life available for old Turbine/Generators and boilers

Maintaining the integrity of power generation and supply with a very limited number of plant-capacity additions is the goal of the utility industry during the next 20 years. This goal can only be realized by careful operation and timely maintenance of existing generating capacity, thus conserving the availability of in-place equipment. Utilities are challenging their major suppliers to extend the design lives of existing equipment to 50 to 60 years without adversely affecting availability, as many fossil units are approaching the 35 to 40 year design limit of their original design lives. Leading boiler and turbine/generator manufacturers are equipped to undertake major modernization/rehabilitation programs for upgrading, uprating, and repowering steam generators, turbine/generators, and auxiliary equipment. This progam must be customized to the individual needs of a specific unit. Many units that are now operating at derated capacities can be restored to their original output, and often can produce 10% or more above their original design ratings with improved heat rates and overall efficiencies. 14 figures, 2 tables.
