Earlier the authors showed that N-sulfonyltellurimides react with aromatic aldehydes to form N-sulfonylazomethines. In order to investigate the relationships governing the effect of the nature of the chalcogen on the reactivity on chalcogen imides in the present work they studied the analogous reaction of N-sulfonylselenimides. They established that N-sulfonylselenimides enter into reaction with aromatic aldehydes leading to the formation of N-sulfonylazomethines. This reaction forms the basis of the catalytic action of selenimides during the condensation of aldehydes with sulfonamides.
