A community was exposed for 3 d to formaldehyde (HCHO), paraformaldehyde, hexamethylenetretramine, and trimethylamine emitted from an overheated tanker car that contained urea-formaldehyde resin. Residents experienced acute HCHO symptoms at the time of the accident. Many had chronic multiple organ health complaints as described previously. Three years following the accident, exposed subjects were compared to residents in a nearby unexposed community for the following immunologic parameters: peripheral blood CD26, CD25 and CD21 cells, autoantibodies, and antibodies to HCHO-albumin conjugate. Results show that in addition to elevated autoantibodies, the exposed subjects had an activated immune system. Also, isotypes of HCHO-albumin resulted from this exposure only, and not from other sources, e.g., smoking, mobile home residency, and wood stoves.
