Distribution of inhaled /sup 238/PuO/sub 2/ particles in Syrian hamster lungs

Syrian hamsters were exposed by inhalation to a monodisperse aerosol of /sup 238/PuO/sub 2/, and the distribution of particles in their lungs was studied as a function of time after exposure. The particles deposited preferentially in the central regions of the lung, moved toward the periphery, and were cleared from all regions, except regions receiving high levels of damage, with about equal efficiency. The local distribution of particles in lung was less uniform with increasing time and lung burden of plutonium.
