Effect of platinum on the homogeneous chain oxidation of hydrogen

An inhibiting effect was shown for metallic platinum on the chain oxidation of hydrogen between the first and second combustion limits. The conversion of the detonating mixture and the concentrations of HO/sub 2/ radicals were measured upon variation of the temperature, amount of platinum introduced, and free volume of the reactor. HO/sub 2/ radicals were shown to accumulate in the gas phase in the presence of platinum. The probable steps in the formation of HO/sub 2/ radicals involving platinum were examined.
