Comparative efficiency of bulk Ni-Mo and Ni-W catalytic systems in hydrogenation and hydrodesulfurization reactions

Catalytic properties have been compared for Ni-Mo and Ni-W bulk catalysts molded with aluminum oxide; the catalysts were prepared by sulfiding the optimized oxide predecessors, and the activity was tested in the hydrogenation of o-xylene and the hydrodesulfurization of thiophene. It was found that strong granules of the Ni-W catalyst with maximum activity could be obtained only by pressing into tablets after sulfiding; for the Ni-Mo catalyst, the best procedure was extrusion molding in the oxide form. The advantages and disadvantages of the optimized Ni-Mo and Ni-W catalysts are discussed, in terms of differences in the hydrogenating and hydrodesulfurizing activities, the pore structure of the granules, and the regeneration characteristics.
