USCEA's primary mission is to increase public acceptance of nuclear energy in the United States, and to this end, we conduct a wide variety of communication programs. Our communications programs are based on extensive and continuous public opinion research. We know that to affect what Americans will believe about nuclear energy tomorrow, we must first understand what they believe today. To this end, USCEA uses independent research firms to conduct regular surveys of public attitudes about nuclear energy. From survey to survey, we were able to monitor how opinion changes and draw important conclusions about what messages are most meaningful to the public. These surveys have taught us many important things. in the past, our industry often tried to reassure the public about how safe nuclear energy is. But research tells us it is more effective to talk about the benefits of nuclear energy than just to explain how low the risks are. And as people's understanding of the need increases, their concerns about risk decrease.
