Public opinion and news-media perceptions of nuclear energy are like reeds blowing in the wind. Both attitudes and knowledge tend to be superficial and subject to frequent change. US Council for Energy Awareness (USCEA) research has shown that fully half of the American public will change their minds about nuclear energy even within a short period of time. This mushiness in public acceptance, as the pollsters call it, poses a key challenge for industry communicators: public information efforts cannot be sporadic; they must be constant, consistent, and pervasive.
