Energy Research Corporation has developed a fuel cell driven automatic powerplant for the U.S. Army. The start-up of this powerplant from room temperature is obtained in less than 15 minutes. The powerplant output automatically follows load change from all operating conditions. At rated DC output, the thermal efficiency of the generator set is about 26% (LHV). Successful operation of the powerplant for over one hundred hours demonstrated the fuel cell driven generator to be a viable alternative to the conventional small size engine driven generator sets for transportable power generation applications.
