Overview of fuel cell powerplant development in the United States

Conference ·
OSTI ID:20002721
The US Department of Energy's (DOE's) Federal Energy Technology Center is the lead center for implementing DOE's Office of Fossil Energy program for fuel cells for stationary power. There is an emerging distributed generation (DG) stationary power market and the changes occurring in the electric industry in the US DG represents generation at or near the customer site (including substation and feeder lines). It offers a more reliable and cleaner alternative to baseload power generation and the concomitant transmission and distribution, and it has the potential to be deployed by both generators and end-users (industrial, commercial, and residential). US DOE efforts have been made to assist private sector organizations to develop and commercialize stationary fuel cell powerplants in the US for DG and other markets. Also, one of the most promising developments in fuel cell powerplants has been made--the conceptual development of very high efficiency fuel cell gas turbine powerplants.
