Kinematics of the high-speed gas in the envelopes of Seyfert 1 nuclei and quasars

The velocity field of gas clouds in the envelopes of the nuclei of type 1 Seyfert galaxies and quasars is calculated. Material is assumed to be flowing outward, with the clouds decelerated by the drag of the intercloud gas. A critical cloud size is introduced such that in the L..cap alpha.. line the cloud will have an optical depth tau/sub L/..cap alpha..roughly-equal10/sup 2/--10/sup 3/. The opportunity for absorption lines to form in quasar envelopes is discussed.
