Production of J/psi particles in. pi. p and pp collisions

The production of J/psi mesons in pp collisions in the energy range from 70 GeV to ISR energies is considered in the framework of the pion-exchange model, taking into account the experimental data on J/psi production in ..pi..p collisions. A new parametrization is proposed for the inclusive cross section of the process ..pi..p..-->..J/psi+X over a wide energy region. It is shown that the pion exchange model, with parameters obtained from an analysis of the nucleon and ..delta.. isobar spectra, enables one to describe the energy dependence and the shape of the J/psi spectrum in pp collisions. The relation between the cross sections for the associated production of a J/psi particle with a nucleon, or with a ..delta.. isobar, is determined. A possible interpretation of the results is discussed in terms of the quark-parton approach.
