Calculation of the level shift for the pionic atom of deuterium

The ground state of the pionic atom of deuterium is studied on the basis of equations obtained in a reformulation of the method of strong channel coupling method using the Schwinger variational principle (A. L. Zubarev, Sov. J. Nucl. Phys. 28, 287 (1978)). The ..pi..d scattering length and level shift of the deuterium pionic atom are calculated. It is found from these calculations that the error in the Deser formula (S. Deser et al., Phys. Rev. 96, 774 (1954)) is 9%.
