Accuracy of calculations of shell corrections

Conditions are formulated which determine the accuracy of the method of shell corrections in its practical use in combination with phenomenological models for calculations of the deformation energy and mass of nuclei. The data of Bunatyan (Yad. Fiz. 28, 72 (1978); 29, 38 (1979) (Sov. J. Nucl. Phys. 28, 35 (1978); 29, 18 (1979))), which have served as the basis for critical remarks regarding the accuracy of shell energy corrections, are analyzed.
