Measurement of the pion form factor in the reaction e/sup +/e/sup -/. --> pi. /sup +/. pi. /sup -/ in the energy range 0. 40--0. 46 GeV

The pion form factor has been measured in the energy range of the colliding electron-positron beams ..sqrt..s from 0.4 to 0.46 GeV. The particle separation was accomplished by means of a new time-of-flight technique on the basis of spark counters with a localized discharge. The form-factor values obtained confirm the validity of the meson vector dominance model predictions in the vicinity of the e/sup +/e/sup -/..--> pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ reaction threshold. The resulting value of the mean square radius of the pion is = 0.366 +- 0.047 F/sup 2/.
