New trenching system buries Japanese pipeline

Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd., has installed a 15-mile 24-in. gas pipeline in Tokyo Bay using a new trenching system designed by R. T. Roach and Associates, Houston, and engineered by Nippon Kokan KK. Nippon Kokan modified its Anzen Maru II (AM-2) lay barge to handle the jetting machine. Unusual considerations in this project included (1) the soft sedimentary soils in Tokyo Bay, (2) the large cross section of the ditch, and (3) the extreme sensitivity of the Japanese public and the politically powerful Japanese Fisherman Union to pollution of Tokyo Bay. Before work stated, the trenching system's machinery was thoroughly tested in Tokyo Bay until Japanese officials were satisfied that the trenching system would perform as desired.
