Counterstreaming electron-beam beat-wave accelerator

The beat-wave excitation of plasma waves in a counterstreaming electron beam is studied, and the consequences for particle acceleration are discussed. Both the plasma-wave length and the pump-depletion length can be significantly longer than that in the plasma beat-wave accelerator. Thus the single-stage energy gain of the accelerated particles is greatly increased, whereas the injection energy for particle trapping is greatly reduced; this allows the possibility of ion acceleration.
