High voltage dc transmission via submarine cables is being considered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to carry up to 70 MW from the Snettisham Hydroelectric Project to Juneau, Alaska. Now under construction and due for completion by the Corps in 1971, Snettisham is only 28 miles southeast of the City of Juneau. A 45 mile sea level route was selected for a 138 kV ac transmission line in order to avoid deep snow and heavy icing conditions on the route over mountains.
