British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority, Vancouver, has completed the first stage of its high voltage direct current interconnection between the lower mainland and Vancouver Island. This intertie is the first hvdc transmission line to be placed in service in the Western Hemisphere. There are fewer than ten projects of this type in the world. The new line connects Arnott Station near Lander on the Mainland with the Stratford Station near Duncan on the Island, a distance of 42 miles. Approximately 19 miles of the dc intertie lie under water.
