Poisoning mechanisms in electrocatalysis studied in the instance of methanol electrooxidation at platinum

The effects of various added poisons (lead ions, bromide ions, iodide ions, benzene, and hexyl alcohol) on methanol adsorption and electrooxidation at a smooth platinum electrode were studied under conditions of free competition for the surface. The rate of methanol electrooxidation falls exponentially with increasing coverage of the platinum surface by poison. At a given degree of coverage by methanol species, the nature of the posion and the very fact that it is present on the surface are unimportant for the rate of methanol electrooxidation.
