The methods of radiometry, polarization, and potentiodynamic measurements were used to study the corrosion and electrochemical adsorption behavior of anodically polarized, smooth platinum in aqueous-methanolic (less than or equal to 10 M CH/sub 3/OH) 2 M HClO/sub 4/ solutions at potentials less than or equal to 3.2 V. The laws of methanol adsorption are typical for those on an energetically inhomogeneous surface. The corrosion reaction either is inhibited or accelerated when methanol is added to the solution, the effect depending on electrode potential and on the methanol concentration attained. A similar action is seen with respect to the oxygen evolution reaction. An exponential dependence is found to exit between the rates of these reactions and the coverage of the anode surface by chemisorbed oxygen. The data are interpreted in terms of the concept that the reactions concerned are coupled.
