Since the Chinese continental shelf was opened to foreign operators over four years ago, 31 oil companies from nine countries have signed 23 contracts involving a total contractual area of 93,289 sq km. Over $20 billion will be spent on five sea areas - Bohai Gulf, South Yellow Sea, South China, Sea and Pearl River Estuary, Yinggehai Sea, and Beibu Gulf. Up to the end of September 1984, 55 exploratory wells had been drilled in 41 structures. Of that total, 27 wells in 15 structures found oil and gas flows. In May of last year Nanhai West Oil Corp. (NHWOC) and Total Chine signed an agreement on trial production of the Wei 10-3 oil field in the Beibu Gulf of the South China Sea. The field, which well be producing by May 1986, will be developed using a 12-slot wellhead platform, a single point mooring system, pipelines and a storage tanker.
