It has been shown by temperature-programmed reduction and electronic diffuse reflectance spectroscopy that the interstitial structures with Cu/sup 3 +/ and Cu/sup 2 +/ ions in CuO-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts are reduced to clusters of metallic copper at 340-355/sup 0/C and 400-600/sup 0/C, respectively, that the CuO surface oxide aggregates are reduced to particles of a Cu/sup 0/ phase at 190-285/sup 0/C, and that the tetrahedrally coordinated Cu/sup 2 +/ ions in CuAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/ are reduced in the 350-400/sup 0/C temperature range.
