EPR spectra were obtained and rate constants were measured of disproportionation of phenoxyl radicals from di(2-hydroxy-3-tert-butyl-5-methylphenyl) monosulfide (I) and its ethyl-substituted analog (II). These constants are described by the expression log k/sub 9/ = 7.18 - (5050 +/- 750)/4.576T (I) and log k/sub 9/ = 9.10 - (7820 +/- 250)/4.576T (II). The reaction of (I) and (II) with peroxy compounds was studied on a model peroxide, dicyclohexyl peroxydicarbonate (CPC). The rate constants of the reactions with CPS are described by expressions log k = 5.83 - (11,400 +/- 800)/4.576T (I) and log k = 6.83 - (12,400 +/- 700)/4.576T (II). It was shown that in the reaction of (I) and (II) with CPS, radicals are effectively generated; their yield per molecule of reacted peroxide is approx. 10/sup -1/, and decreases with increase in temperature. The possible reasons for the unusual behavior of the system are discussed.
