Aqueous solutions of glycine and acetate have been pulse irradiated in the presence of O/sub 2/. Radicals produced from these compounds by H-abstraction, reacted with O/sub 2/ to form peroxy radicals. The reaction rate constants k/sub (RH+O/sub 2/)/ = (2.1 +- 0.3) x 10/sup 9/ and approx. = 1 x 10/sup 9/ m/sup -1/ sec /sup -1/ measured for RH = acetate radicals and glycine radicals, at pH 8.2 and 7.9, respectively. The peroxy acetate radicals decay by a second order reaction, k = (6.5 +- 1) x 10/sup 8/ M/sup -1/ sec/sup -1/ at both pH = 5.7 and 8.2. The peroxy glycine radicals produce O/sub 2//sup -/ by a first order process, k = (1.5 +- 0.3) x 10/sup 5/ sec/sup -1/ at pH = 7.9. Evidence for the formation of O/sub 2//sup -/ from glycine peroxy radicals is presented.
