Progress report on ehv transmission research project

Journal Article · · Edison Electr. Inst. Bull.; (United States)

In recent years, the impetus toward 500 and 700-kV ehv line construction has emphasized such problems as switching-surge performance of towers, the electrical strength of long insulator strings when wet or polluted, acceptable radio noise levels, and influence of corona loss on the selection of conductor sizes. Dealing successfully with problems such as these -- most of which are far removed from the ordinary concerns of the manufacturers -- requires the creation and support of special facilities and development of special skills. Therefore, EEI has embarked on a strong program of research support in these problem areas, and one of its major efforts has been the sponsorship o additional ehv transmission research at Project ehv.
