Applies stoichiometric principles to nitrification in order to disprove the beliefs that the fraction of nitrifying bacteria present in an activated sludge population has a marked effect on nitrification rates and that the fraction of nitrifiers present is independent of mean cell residence time. Presents table of biokinetic coefficients for an example problem. Concludes that based on a stoichiometric analysis of the nitrification process at steady-state conditions: (1) for a given wastewater, the nitrifier fraction is not a constant and is dependent on the mean cell residence time and the COD:TKN ratio; and (2) the percentage of nitrifier present in an activated sludge biomass does not have an effect on the rate of nitrification.
