Case for quasinuclear N N bound states

Recent experimental results on nucleon-antinucleon annihilation reactions of the type {ital {bar N}N}{r arrow}{pi}{ital X} have provided evidence for a new mesonic state {ital X}{sub 2} with quantum numbers {ital J}{sup {pi}{ital C}}({ital I}{sup {ital G}})=2{sup ++}(0{sup +}) which lies outside of the usual quark-antiquark ({ital Q{bar Q}}) tensor meson nonet of flavor SU(3). We show that the observed production rates of {ital X}{sub 2} from atomic {ital {bar p}p} states of orbital angular momentum {ital L}=0,1, as well as the decay characteristics of {ital X}{sub 2}, namely, its preference for {rho}{rho} over {pi}{pi} decay and the absence of an observable {ital {bar K}K} mode, are consistent with an interpretation of {ital X}{sub 2} as a quasinuclear bound state of the {ital {bar N}N} potential. The principal binding mechanism for such states is provided by the coherent tensor forces for isospin {ital I}=0 which arise from meson exchanges. We review the evidence for the 0{sup ++}(0{sup +}) and 1{sup {minus}{minus}}(0{sup {minus}}) states predicted in this model and apply the {sup 3}{ital P}{sub 0} strong-coupling quark model to estimate the decay branching ratios for a variety of {ital {bar N}N} bound states. Key experimental tests of our interpretation are discussed.
