Have quasinuclear NN-bar bound states been discovered

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
It is suggested that a broad structure X/sup 0/(1480) recently observed in the reaction p-barn..--> pi../sup -/X/sup 0/..-->..3..pi../sup -/2..pi../sup +/ may be interpretable in terms of an unstable quasinuclear bound state of the (complex) nucleon-antinucleon (NN-bar) potential. The observed mass, production branching ratio, and preference for the X/sup 0/..-->..rho/sup 0/rho/sup 0/ rather than ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/ decay mode are consistent with a quantum-number assignment J/sup P//sup C/(I/sup G/) = 2/sup ++/(0/sup +/). Prospects for finding the lower-lying 0/sup ++/(0/sup +/) and 1/sup --/(0/sup -/) members of the expected natural-parity quasinuclear band are discussed.
