The fabrication of sapphire etalon plates which control laser modes is described. The etalon can be a single piece of sapphire with flat and parallel faces or it can be two such plates separated by a spacer. Lapmaster machines are used one for grinding and the other for polishing. The laps are black granite. Grinding and polishing are done with diamond paste. (FS)
