Search for transfer-induced /sup 12/C + /sup 12/C resonances in the /sup 12/C(/sup 16/O,. cap alpha. )/sup 24/Mg* reaction

Evidence for population of /sup 12/C + /sup 12/C resonant states in the /sup 12/C(/sup 16/O,Aga)/sup 24/Mg* transfer reaction at 130 MeV incident energy was sought in carbon-carbon coincidence data. Carbon momenta were measured with position sensitive telescopes centered at + 35/sup 0/ and -30/sup 0/. Despite the fact that the experimental configuration discriminates against the prolific projectile breakup process, few events are observed in the kinematic regions corresponding to the resonances. A Monte Carlo simulation of the /sup 12/C(/sup 16/O,..cap alpha..)/sup 24/Mg*..gamma../sup 12/C+/sup 12/C ..-->.. /sup 12/C + /sup 12/C sequential reaction indicates that the transfer production cross section of resonant states is less than one-fourth the value in the literature based on ..cap alpha..-particle singles data at 145 MeV incident energy.
