Effect of the. cap alpha. -transfer reaction on the elastic scattering of /sup 12/C+/sup 24/Mg

Angular distribution of the elastic scattering /sup 24/Mg(/sup 12/C,/sup 12/C)/sup 24/Mg and of the /sup 24/Mg(/sup 12/C,/sup 16/O)/sup 20/Ne transfer reaction have been measured at 40 MeV incident energy, respectively, in the 20/sup 0/< or =theta/sub c.m./< or =115/sup 0/ and 20/sup 0/< or =theta/sub c.m./< or =60/sup 0/ angular regions. The elastic scattering and transfer reactions were analyzed with Frahn's closed formalism as well as with optical model calculations. The influence of the two-step ..cap alpha..-transfer channel (/sup 12/C+/sup 24/Mg..-->../sup 16/O+/sup 20/Ne..-->../sup 12/C+/sup 24/Mg) on the elastic scattering was calculated explicitly using the coupled channel extension of the closed formalism. This calculation shows that the coupling between the ..cap alpha.. transfer and elastic channel can account for the intermediate angle oscillations observed in the elastic scattering angular distributions.
