Addition of Cu(I) and Cu(II) as well as thiols and certain other sulfur-containing compounds to a cuprous chloride catalyst accelerates the hydration of methylacetylene and acetylene and also produces a marked change in the direction of addition of water to substituted acetylenes. In this paper the dependence of the rate of hydration of methylacetylene on the activity of Cu(I) and chloride ions has been studied under steady-state conditions in a gradientless reactor at 80/degree/C. The composition of the catalytically active complexes taking part in the hydration of methylacetylene is discussed.
