Lanthanide complexes of 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol

Journal Article · · J. Coord. Chem.; (United States)

The reaction of 2,6-diformyl-4-methylphenol H(MDA), with lanthanide(III) acetate in aqueous methanol generally yields complexes of formula (M(MDA)/sub 3/), except for lanthanum, which forms the mixed adduct (La(MDA)/sub 2/(O/sub 2/CMe)).H(MDA). The last compound releases the neutral ligand molecule on heating, yielding the anhydrous species species (La(MDA)/sub 2/(O/sub 2/CMe)). For M = Ce, either the main product (Ce(MDA)/sub 3/) or a small amount of the mixed complex (Ce(MDA)/sub 2/(O/sub 2/CMe)) has been isolated. The complexes have been characterized by infrared, /sup 1/H and /sup 13/C NMR spectroscopy and by thermogravimetric measurements.
