Metabolic changes in free amino acids of bean leaves exposed to ozone

Journal Article · · Phytopathology; (United States)
OSTI ID:5830236
Leaves of bean, tobacco, beet, corn, barley, or rye that are visibly damaged by ozone accumulate several common free amino acids. Shorter periods of ozonation, which do not cause visible damage to the leaves, produce more specific metabolic responses: ..gamma..-amino-n-butyric acid (GABA) and alanine increase, and glutamic acid decreases. To our knowledge this is the first report on changes in amino acid metabolism effected by ozone fumigation. The pattern of amino acid labeling and fixation of CO/sub 2/ by ozonated plants suggests a complex process of enhanced decarboxylation of glutamic acid, and inhibited photosynthesis and protein synthesis. These effects could result from the oxidation of essential sulfhydryl groups and increased membrane permeability. 12 references, 2 tables.
