It has been established that the pyrolysis of silane in the temperature range 973-1373 K and under pressures of 1.0-45. mm Hg is a two-step process. The first, rapid step, in which as much as 45% of the silane is consumed in a fraction of a second in the temperature range 973-1173 K, has a reaction order n/sub 1/ = 1.35 and an effective activation energy /anti/E/sub 1/ 83.5 /plus minus/ 5.4 kJ/mole. It is shown that the second, slow step has a weak temperature dependence (/anti/E/sub 2/ = 8.6-18.2 kJ/mole) and is of zero order.
