This paper discusses the Haapavesi power station, the first peat-fired condensate power station in Finland. The plant is located 500 km north of Helsinki in a moorland where the fuel is milled off the surface. The average distances for transportation of peat are 20 km. It is a base-load plant and will generate 155 MW (the power station unit is started before coal-fired plants). The yearly operating time of the plant will be 6000 to 8000 plants. Fuel used for the boiler is milled peat with heavy oil used as reserve fuel. Construction work started in 1987 and commercial operation of the plant began on 29.12.1989.
