Limit on the mass of the electron neutrino from studies of inner bremsstrahlung

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5822013

Sources of /sup 193/Pt and /sup 163/Ho decontaminated from other radioactivities by a factor of > 10/sup 13/ have been produced at the ISOLDE facility on-line to the CERN 600 MeV Synchrocyclotron. The /sup 193/Pt was used to verify the theory for inner bremsstrahlung electron capture decay (IBEC). The Q/sub EC/ value is 56,3 +/- 0,3 keV, and the data make it possible to give an upper limit on the electron neutrino mass of 500 eV (90% C.L.). For /sup 163/Ho the partial M electron capture half life was determined to be (4.0 +/- 1,2) x 10/sup 4/ y, from which the authors deduce a half life of (7 +/- 2) x 10/sup 4/ y. Together with the independently measured /sup 163/Ho-/sup 163/Dy mass difference of 2.3 +/- 1.0 keV they imply an upper limit of m/sub nu//sub e/ of 1.3 keV.
