Polarized deuteron elastic scattering at 79 MeV and the effects of breakup channel coupling

We report angular distribution measurements of the cross section, the vector analyzing power (A/sub y/), and two tensor analyzing powers A/sub y/y and X/sub 2/ = (2A/sub xx/+A/sub yy/)/ ..sqrt..3 for the elastic scattering of 79-MeV polarized deuterons from /sup 58/Ni. These measurements are compared in detail with folding model calculations that include perturbative corrections for coupling to deuteron breakup channels.
