A common chiller plant operating strategy is to raise a centrifugal chiller's leaving chilled water temperature (LCHWT) as the building's cooling load drops. This is called chilled water reset. Most experts believe it is an inexpensive way to save energy. But as an energy saving strategy, chilled water rest may be overrated, especially when applied to constant speed centrifugals. As this article demonstrates the full energy saving potential of chilled water reset is best realized when applied to variable speed centrifugals.
