Advanced vertical junction solar cells

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5820350
The vertical junction silicon solar cell is a device having enhanced radiation resistance and beginning of life performance as compared to solar cells presently used for space application. Recent refinements in fabrication techniques have been accomplished which further increased the radiation resistance of these cells. Cells with a wall to groove ratio of 90% have been fabricated using improved photolithographic imaging and etching methods. These cells are predicted to show radiation damage of only 7% after 1x10/sup 16/ equivalent 1MeV electrons/cm/sup 2/ as compared to 35% for a planar silicon solar cell of the same base resistivity.
