The helicity formalism is used to study the consequences of angular momentum conservation for elastic ..pi..N scattering at high energies and large fixed angles. On the basis of heuristic considerations it is proposed that the dynamical amplitudes introduced are independent of the helicity. A ''kinematical hierarchy'' is obtained which for ..pi..N scattering reduces to dominance of the amplitude without spin flip.
