Estimates of production from the UK sector of the North Sea this year and the volume of reserves have been downgraded in the UK Department of Energy's annual report. The Department says production for 1980 should average 1.6 to 1.7 million bpd, compared with estimates of 1.7 to 2.1 million bpd made in 1979 for 1980. Estimates of the original recoverable oil reserves now range between 16.06 billion bbl and 32.12 billion bbl, a reduction of about 730 million bbl from the midpoint of 1979's estimates. The report says approximately one-half of the reduction results from reassessment of some fields currently undergoing development or appraisal. The remainder results from some unsuccessful exploratory drilling. However, new discoveries have restored the volume of oil reserves to close to 1979's level. Taking into account cumulative production of 1.3 billion bbl at the end of 1979, remaining reserves in UK waters are estimated at 14.6 to 30.66 billion bbl.
