Dispute continues over Georges Bank

The prospect for offshore oil exploration at Georges Bank is uncertain. Efforts are underway to reopen a 1978 lawsuit that charges Interior Secretary Cecil B. Andrus and other Federal officials with not doing enough to protect a $1-billion fishing industry centered on Georges Bank. The pro and con arguments on exploration for oil and gas boil down to the value of oil and/or gas that might result from what environmentalists see as risky exploratory drilling. Some groups want nothing less than a marine sanctuary. Others argue that scarce fuel could be produced with no danger to marine life.
